A thorough review of one of the last good acoustic guitars for the average person, the Seagull S6:

How cool is this, when one of the few good acoustic guitars for under $500, the Seagull S6, actually sounds more like a $3,000 guitar?

The Seagull S6 Original Acoustic Guitar keeps getting consistently positive user reviews like that, and only the truly good acoustics guitars do. Its user ratings on and other sites are overwhelmingly good, and the users are genuinely enthusiastic about their love for this instrument! That’s a rare and beautiful thing.

Here’s an overview of the Seagull S6 features (also see the video demo, below):

  • Select Pressure Tested Solid Cedar Top
  • Double Action Truss Rod
  • Tusq nut and compensated saddle for better intonation
  • Tapered Headstock for precise and stable tuning – great for open tunings
  • Made in North America
  • Winner of several awards
  • Silver leaf maple neck
  • Rosewood fretboard, saddle, and bridge
  • Wild cherry laminate back and sides
  • Many other subtle quality touches that really set this instrument apart!

The best way to know about this surprising acoustic guitar before trying or buying is to read what its users are saying about the Seagull S6. Here are some excerpts from actual user reviews:

Best value at this price point or even three times as much.
–R. Rangel, Chicago, Il

…in conclusion: you get what you pay for. And in the case of the Seagull, you get a quite a bit more of what really counts.
–David W. Groat, Detroit, MI

Most guitars in this price range are cheaply made in asia and heavily lacquered. Not this baby!
If something ever happened to it I’d skip right past the Taylors and Martins and buy another one of these without a second thought….
You could spend a lot more money and not get an instrument this nice. For $400, it’s hard to imagine that you’ll do better.
–Ronald, L.A., CA

Here’s another user testimonial: this reviewer (A.L. Card) has both the Seagull S6 and its big brother, the Maritime, in his home, and they are the most loved guitars in the house! (There are five other guitars.)

Fact is, I have yet to find any user of the Seagull S6 Acoustic Guitar that does not enthusiastically love it. They all seem to think it really is one of the few good acoustic guitars you can get without spending thousands of dollars. But it’s not perfect. Here are the honest pros and cons:

The Good
  • A very good, clear sounding guitar – not over-lacquered
  • Oil finish and well-designed bracing really improve the sound over its competitors
  • Fine craftsmanship right out of the box (no need to file frets, etc.)
  • Easy to play (good action)
  • Good, loud, projected sound – not muffled like many competitors
  • The cedar top gives it a great, warm tone!
  • Compares well with guitars costing several times its price
The Bad
  • At $399, this is not for the noodler, although serious beginners will never regret buying this
  • Believe it or not, there are no other notable cons!
